Ιδρύθηκε η πρώτη ελληνική δανειστική βιβλιοθήκη του Λονδίνου

Μια κινητή ελληνική δανειστική βιβλιοθήκη λειτουργεί από το τέλος του 2017 στο Λονδίνο, με σκοπό να καλύψει τις ανάγκες όσων αγαπούν τη σύγχρονη λογοτεχνία και ποίηση και ζουν στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία. 

Είναι μια πρωτοβουλία νέων, κυρίως, ανθρώπων που συγκρότησαν τον Ελληνικό Κύκλο Βιβλιόφιλων Λονδίνου (Ε.ΚΥ.ΒΙ.Λ), για την ανταλλαγή βιβλίων αλλά και μια σειρά δράσεων, σε συνεργασία με Πανεπιστήμια, εκδόσεις και προσωπικότητες των Γραμμάτων και των Τεχνών από την Ελλάδα.

Οι συναντήσεις γίνονται σε γνωστά ελληνικά καφέ του Λονδίνου, αφού οι ενδιαφερόμενοι έχουν επιλέξει τα βιβλία από την ιστοσελίδα της δανειστικής βιβλιοθήκης. Οι ενότητες (ελληνική και ξένη λογοτεχνία, ποίηση, ιστορία, δοκίμιο) εμπλουτίζονται διαρκώς, ενώ έχουν προγραμματιστεί εκδόσεις και ανθολογίες σε δίγλωσση παρουσίαση.

Το 2018, μεταξύ άλλων, προγραμματίζεται η πρόσκληση Ελλήνων συγγραφέων και προσωπικοτήτων από τον χώρο της Τέχνης για να επικοινωνήσουν με το κοινό τους στο Λονδίνο. 

Με σύνθημα «τα βιβλία δεν είναι για τα ράφια, αλλά για να μεταφέρουν γνώση», ο Ελληνικός Κύκλος Βιβλιόφιλων του Λονδίνου καλεί για καφέ και ανταλλαγή απόψεων όσους αγαπούν το βιβλίο και ζουν στη βρετανική πρωτεύουσα. 

Καλεί, επίσης, φορείς και όσους δραστηριοποιούνται στον εκδοτικό χώρο στην Ελλάδα, να βοηθήσουν τη δανειστική βιβλιοθήκη με βιβλία σύγχρονης ελληνικής αλλά και ξένης λογοτεχνίας.

Grace Kelly's Irish library: a collection of classic reads … in Monaco

The film star’s roots prompted her to collect Irish literature, including rare editions of Joyce, Beckett and Shaw. The 9,000 volumes are now housed in a lovely, and free, library in the principality.

I don’t go to Monaco for the sports cars or casinos but to enjoy a delicate, pea-green first full edition of James Joyce’s Ulysses, published by Sylvia Beach of Paris bookshop Shakespeare and Co in 1922. The book is in the world’s greatest – but probably least-known – Irish library, near the Prince’s Palace in Monaco.

On the shelves are leather-bound volumes of Jonathan Swift’s letters, rare collections of the works of Oscar Wilde, John M Synge and George Bernard Shaw, first editions of Flann O’Brien, Katharine Tynan, Iris Murdoch and William Trevor, and there’s a corner dedicated to Samuel Beckett. It’s an athenaeum of Irish culture in Monaco’s spotless old town, away from the super-yachts and glassy towers of Monte Carlo.

An Irish library in Monaco may seem incongruous but Grace Kelly, wife of Prince Rainier III and mother of the current Prince Albert, was very proud of her Irish heritage and became an avid collector of Irish literature. Her collection formed the basis for the library, which opened in 1984, two years after she died.

In the main salon, a pair of Waterford crystal chandeliers illuminate a facsimile of the Book of Kells and among the hundreds of emerald-coloured volumes in the first-editions room, is the Sinn Féin Rebellion Handbook from Easter 1916, with a false spine so it could be kept on the shelf in disguise. In another cabinet is an original of Joyce’s Dubliners alongside some of young Grace’s schoolbooks with her name inscribed on the inside page in a curly, schoolgirl script.

There’s also a huge collection of Irish sheet music and an upright piano that writer Anthony Burgess used to play, a glass of whisky gently vibrating on the lid and a cigar smouldering in the ashtray. Burgess, a friend of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, was a driving force behind the inauguration of the library (his grandmother was Irish and Joyce was his literary hero) and became one of its founding trustees.My favourite item is a copy of Joyce’s first novel, dedicated to his sister Eileen and her husband Frank, signed “Jim”. It sits beside bronze sculptures of Brendan Behan, Wilde and Joyce. Visitors can sit in the library and read and borrow some of the books – though not the first-edition Ulysses or the giant 17th-century Atlas Hibernia.

The collection now has around 9,000 volumes and also offers a children’s section, lectures and readings, and a writer-in-residence scheme. There’seven a green Fabergé crystal egg glinting in a cabinet.

Βιβλιοθήκη είναι χτισμένη στα σύνορα μεταξύ δύο χωρών

Η Bιβλιοθήκη Haskell χτίστηκε το 1904 ακριβώς πάνω στα σύνορα των ΗΠΑ με το Καναδά. Ανάμεσα σε δύο πόλεις, στο Στάνστεντ του Κεμπέκ και στο Ντέρμπι Λάιν του Βερμόντ. Είναι ένα παραδοσιακό κτήριο, νεοκλασικό, το οποίο φιλοξενεί και μια μικρή αίθουσα όπερας. Και φυσικά έχει δύο διευθύνσεις και δύο πόρτες, μία για κάθε χώρα!

Κατασκευάστηκε από τα παιδιά της οικογένειας Haskell στην μνήμη των γονιών τους. Και όχι τυχαία πάνω στα σύνορα. Ο πατέρας ήταν Αμερικανός και η μητέρα Καναδή. Όνειρό τους λοιπόν ήταν να χτίσουν μια δημόσια βιβλιοθήκη και μια αίθουσα όπερας που θα μπορούσαν να επισκεφτούν άνθρωποι και από τις δύο χώρες, χωρίς να βρουν εμπόδια στα σύνορα. Δεν κατάφεραν να κάνουν το όνειρό τους πράξη εν ζωή και το έκαναν τα παιδιά τους.

Οι αίθουσες με τα βιβλία και η σκηνή της όπερας βρίσκονται στην περιοχή που ανήκει στον Καναδά για τον λόγο αυτό θεωρείται η μοναδική βιβλιοθήκη της Αμερικής χωρίς βιβλία και η μοναδική αμερικανική όπερα χωρίς σκηνή! Το απόλυτο σύνορο των δύο χωρών περνάει κάτω από τις θέσεις της όπερας και από το κέντρο της κεντρικής αίθουσας του βιβλιοθηκονόμου.

Έτσι, όποιος επισκέπτεται τις συγκεκριμένες αίθουσες βλέπει μια μαύρη γραμμή να διαπερνάει το πάτωμα. Περνώντας τη γραμμή αυτόματα περνάς στην άλλη χώρα. Η βιβλιοθήκη έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως διατηρητέο ​​κτίριο από τις δύο χώρες.

Locked in a library — and only Jane Austen can help you escape

Montague library finds creative way to attract readers

Jane Austen died 200 years ago this year, but fascination around the celebrated author hasn't waned — so much so, in fact, that a P.E.I. library is offering an escape room with an Austen theme this Wednesday. 

Escape rooms are a popular form of entertainment in which a group of people are locked in a room and must decipher a series of clues in order to break free. 

"Seeing people excited about reading is something that we're always striving for, so it's always nice to see that in our spaces," said Grace Dawson, librarian at the Montague Rotary Library. 

Anybody is welcome to come to the free event, and it already has several confirmed attendees from a Jane Austen book club that uses the church across the street from the library. 

Library staff are coming up with the puzzles and clues from Austen's novels Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

Participants aren't allowed to use the internet to solve the riddles, but "we're not trying to make it too hard — we're focusing more on the popular parts of her novels and popular characters for the clues," Dawson said.

"She's very popular — her books continue to go out at the library," Dawson said. "She definitely has relevance in modern day as well." 

Fresh ideas from libraries

Libraries across P.E.I. continue to brainstorm fresh ideas to bring readers old and new through their doors.

"We want to offer programming that the public is interested in," Dawson said. "Whether it's information sessions, or PD day programming for kids — we're always trying to offer different types of programming that's really going to be valuable and meaningful, and fun of course." 

The library has previously had escape rooms for young teens based on Dr. Seuss books, and another that asked kids to crack a code.
